What is a board foot? Board foot is the primary unit of measure used in the lumber industry. A board foot is a piece of lumber equivalent in size to a one-foot long piece of 1x12. A 1x12 is a piece of wood 1" thick and 12" wide.) The formula for calculating board footage is:
Thickness (inches) x Width (inches) x length (feet) Using this formula, then a one foot long 1x12 becomes: 1x12x1 = 12 = 1 board foot
